How to Edit MOV Files on a PC

The MOV format is owned and regulated by Apple Inc. and it is specialized for encoding digital video files. PC users have numerous options when it comes to editing MOV files. Apple's proprietary media player, QuickTime, is engineered to work natively with MOV files. In addition to being offered in a Windows version, the media player may be used to edit MOV files when users upgrade to QuickTime Pro. PC users also have the option of using freeware alternatives like MPEG Streamclip and Avidemux for editing MOV files.

QuickTime Pro

Step 1

Download and install QuickTime. The media player may be obtained directly from Apple.

Step 2

Launch QuickTime. Go to "Help" on the program menu and select "Buy QuickTime Pro …"; follow the instructions to purchase the license and activate the program upgrade.

Step 3

Go to "File" and select "Open File ... "; locate the MOV file in the file selection window; then choose the item and click the "Open" button to load the video into the application.

Step 4

Move the "in" and "out" markers on the clip timeline around any section of the video that needs to be removed. Go to "Edit" and select "Delete."

Step 5

Move the "in" and "out" markers around any section of the video that needs to be duplicated. Go to "Edit" and select "Copy." Move the playhead to the insertion point on the clip timeline, go to "Edit" and select "Paste."

Step 6

Move the "in" and "out" markers around any section of the video that needs to be repurposed. Go to "Edit" and select "Cut." Move the playhead to the insertion point on the clip timeline, go to "Edit" and select "Paste."

Step 7

Undo any edits by going to "Edit" and selecting "Undo." Click "Redo" to re-apply any edits.

Step 8

Go to "File" and click "Save" to render any edits to the MOV file.

Step 9

Close QuickTime by going to "File" and selecting "Exit."

MPEG Streamclip

Step 1

Download and install MPEG Streamclip for Windows. The freeware may be obtained directly from the software manufacturer's website.

Step 2

Launch MPEG Streamclip. Go to "File" on the program menu and select "Open ... "; locate the MOV file in the file selection window; choose the item and click the "Open" button to load the video into the application.

Step 3

Isolate any section of the video that needs to be deleted. Move the playhead on the clip timeline to the beginning of the footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Select In." Move the playhead to the end of the footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Select Out." Go to "Edit" and select "Trim."

Step 4

Isolate any section of the video that needs to be reproduced. Move the playhead to the beginning of the footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Select In." Move the playhead to the end of the footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Select Out." Go to "Edit" and select "Copy." Move the playhead to the insertion point of the copied footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Paste."

Step 5

Isolate any section of the video that needs to be rearranged. Move the playhead to the beginning of the footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Select In." Move the playhead to the end of the footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Select Out." Go to "Edit" and select "Cut." Move the playhead to the insertion point of the copied footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Paste."

Step 6

Undo any edits by going to "Edit" and selecting "Undo."

Step 7

Render edits to the MOV file by going to "File" and selecting "Save As … "; program a saving destination and name the edited MOV file in the "Save As" dialog box. Make sure MOV is selected from the "Save as type:" drop-down menu. Click the "Save" button.

Avidemux

Step 1

Download and install Avidemux for Windows. The freeware may be obtained directly from the software manufacturer's website

Step 2

Launch Avidemux. Go to "File" on the program menu and select "Open..."; locate the MOV file in the file selection window; choose the item and click the "Open" button to load the video into the application.

Step 3

Isolate any section of the video that needs to be deleted. Move the playhead on the clip timeline to the beginning of the footage. Click the "Marker A" button. Move the playhead to the end of the footage. Click the "Marker B" button. Go to "Edit" and select "Delete."

Step 4

Isolate any section of the video that needs to be reproduced. Move the playhead on the clip timeline to the beginning of the footage. Click the "Marker A" button. Move the playhead to the end of the footage. Click the "Marker B" button. Go to "Edit" and select "Copy." Move the playhead to the insertion point of the copied footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Paste."

Isolate any section of the video that needs to be rearranged. Move the playhead to the beginning of the footage. Click the "Marker A" button. Move the playhead to the end of the footage. Click the "Marker B" button. Go to "Edit" and select "Cut." Move the playhead to the insertion point of the copied footage. Go to "Edit" and select "Paste."

Step 6

Undo any edits by going to "Edit" and selecting "Undo."

Step 7

Render edits to the MOV file by going to "File," selecting "Save As…" and choosing "Save Video." Program a saving destination and name the edited MOV file (with the .MOV file extension) in the "Save As" dialog box. Click the "Save" button.
